Ysgol Cynwyd Sant Students Accelerate into STEM Racing Season with EESW

Pupils at Ysgol Cynwyd Sant have kick-started their STEM Racing journey for the 2025/26 season, taking their first steps toward designing and engineering a high-speed model car.

The pupils took part in a hands-on workshop delivered by EESW (Engineering Education Scheme Wales), designed to bring science and engineering to life as they prepare for this year’s STEM Racing competition.

During the session, pupils focused on building car chassis and developing aerodynamic body designs, applying their classroom learning about forces and motion to a real engineering challenge.  Working in small teams, they explored how friction, air resistance, and energy transfer affect performance — all while developing essential teamwork, problem-solving, and creativity skills.

The activity links directly to the pupils’ science topic on Forces, helping to connect curriculum learning with real-world applications.  It also forms part of EESW’s wider mission to inspire and support young people across Wales to explore careers in engineering and STEM.

Ysgol Cynwyd Sant is already a strong advocate of STEM education. The school was one of just five Welsh teams to represent Wales at the 2024 UK F1 in Schools National Final, and this year’s group is eager to continue that success.

Class teacher Miss Thomas said:

“It’s fantastic to see the pupils so engaged in bringing science and engineering to life. The project gives them a real purpose for their learning about forces and helps them work together as a team. We’re really proud of how creative and determined they are and excited to see where this year’s journey will take them!”

With previous Welsh Government funding coming to an end, schools now face the challenge of funding their participation in STEM Racing activities.  Despite this, teachers and pupils across Wales remain enthusiastic about continuing their involvement, demonstrating the strong value placed on practical STEM learning.

EESW would like to wish the very best of luck to all schools taking part in the 2025/26 STEM Racing season.  We’re looking forward to seeing the innovation, teamwork, and determination that make this programme such an inspiring celebration of young engineering talent across Wales.

There’s still time to join the race!

Registration remains open, and new teams are encouraged to get involved and line up along side Ysgol Cynwyd Sant and others at the race day in February!
