STEM Racing Teams Visit University of South Wales Trinity Saint David
Following a successful STEM Racing regional season, five schools who were part of that success enjoyed a fantastic visit to the University of South Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD). The trip was organised to recognise the hard work and creativity shown by our STEM Racing teams and to give pupils the chance to explore the exciting motorsport courses available at university level.
A Look Behind the Scenes of Motorsport Study
During the visit, pupils toured UWTSD’s specialist motorsport facilities and learned how students train for careers in engineering, design and racing industries. Seeing real university workshops and learning spaces helped pupils connect their STEM Racing experience with future study and career possibilities.
It was inspiring for many pupils to realise that the skills they’re already developing — teamwork, problem solving and creative thinking — are the same ones used by motorsport engineers every day.
Getting Hands-On with CAD
As part of the day pupils were given a lesson on Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software. Pupils had the opportunity to explore how race car parts are designed digitally before being manufactured, bringing engineering concepts to life.
For many, it was exciting to see how the design process they’ve used in STEM Racing mirrors real-world engineering practice.
Race Car Simulator Fun
A huge highlight of the day was the race car simulator!!! Pupils took turns on the race car simulator, testing their reactions and racing skills while experiencing the challenges drivers face behind the wheel. It was harder than it looks!
The simulator quickly became a favourite part of the day — combining learning with plenty of excitement and friendly competition.
Looking Ahead
The visit was a brilliant way to celebrate the achievements of our STEM Racing teams while helping pupils think about their next steps. Experiences like this show young people that pathways into engineering and motorsport are within reach.
A huge thank you to the team at the University of South Wales Trinity Saint David for hosting such an engaging and inspiring day.
EESW/STEM Cymru is very excited for the new STEM Racing season. We hope to see familiar faces but also welcome new teams to the exciting world of STEM Racing and motorsport engineering!
