New Funding Brings Turbine Time! Wind Energy Project to Schools

EESW STEM Cymru is delighted to announce the launch of Turbine Time!, an exciting new renewable energy project that will bring hands-on wind energy education to schools in the area surrounding the Pen y Cymoedd Wind Farm.

Thanks to newly secured funding from the Pen y Cymoedd Wind Farm Community Fund CIC, the programme will be offered free of charge to participating schools, giving pupils the opportunity to explore the science and engineering behind one of Wales' most important sources of renewable energy.

The Turbine Time! programme combines an engaging in-school workshop with a longer-term teacher-led project designed to encourage investigation, problem-solving and real-world application of STEM skills.

During the workshop, pupils will assemble and test model wind turbines, exploring how turbine design affects performance and learning how wind energy is converted into electricity. Through practical experimentation, students will gain a deeper understanding of the engineering principles that underpin modern renewable energy technologies.

Following the workshop, schools will take part in a teacher-led project that challenges pupils to think like renewable energy engineers. Students will investigate wind conditions around their school site, measuring and comparing wind speeds in different locations before deciding where they would place a wind turbine to generate electricity for their school.

By combining hands-on engineering activities with real-world data collection and analysis, Turbine Time! helps pupils develop key STEM skills including scientific enquiry, critical thinking, teamwork and problem-solving.

The project also provides an opportunity for young people to learn more about the growing renewable energy sector and the wide range of careers available within the green economy.  As Wales continues its journey towards a more sustainable future, inspiring the next generation of engineers, scientists and innovators has never been more important.

EESW STEM Cymru is excited to begin delivering Turbine Time! and looks forward to working with schools across the Pen y Cymoedd area to help pupils discover the power of wind energy through engaging, practical STEM learning experiences.

Perfect as curriculum enrichment or as a transition project linking secondary schools with their feeder primary, we’ll share more details with eligible schools in the coming weeks but contact info@stemcymru.org.uk to register an interest.
