EESW Student of the Year Winners 2019

Congratulations to all the students who took part in the competition this year.

The EESW Student of the Year Award is a celebration of the students who participated in the EESW Sixth Form Project last year, in memory of Dr Tom Parry Jones, entrepreneur, inventor, and trustee of the scheme for over 20 years.  

Over 500 Year 12 students who participated in the scheme last year were invited to apply to become the EESW Student of the Year, and 12 students who were interviewed in North and South Wales were invited to attend this year’s awards ceremony, which took place at the Welsh Automotive Forum’s Annual Networking Dinner at the Vale Resort Hotel on Thursday 5th December 2019. Their places at the dinner were kindly sponsored by Dr Raj Jones and BPU Accountants.  

This year’s winner of the £800 prize, Inyoung Baek from Brynteg School, worked with SAS International on a project to design a tile that could transfer sound energy into energy that can be stored in a battery. Inyoung and his team used piezoelectric transducers to achieve this and won an award for the Most Effective Presentation of the Chosen Solution, sponsored by Industry Wales. His teacher commented:

“Having worked with EESW project students since 1992, I can honestly say Inyoung has an energy and focus that stands out for all to see.
He showed exceptional diligence and focus throughout all aspects of the EESW project and has a genuine focus to become an engineer of the highest calibre in the future.”

The worthy runners-up, Ioan Webber from Gower College Swansea who worked with TATA Steel and Seren Wonklyn from St Joseph’s RC Comprehensive and Sixth Form Centre who worked with Weartech, will each receive £400 towards their future studies.  

As this year’s application process was particularly competitive, the judges also decided to invite four finalists to the dinner to celebrate their success. Jack Spiller from Gower College Swansea, Lauren Pohl from Rougemont School, Lucy Day from Alun School, Mold and Jessica Engledow from St Joseph’s RC Comprehensive and Sixth Form Centre were also presented with a £50 voucher.
