Young People Demonstrate Their Engineering Skills at the Big Bang Fair North Wales

On Wednesday 25th March 2015 hundreds of school pupils gathered at Venue Cymru Llandudno to participate, view and compete in the Big Bang Fair North Wales, which is organised by STEMCymru/Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW).

The one day event saw students of ages 8 to 18 years competing in various competitions, all with a focus on Engineering:

15 Coleg Menai B (Reduced)Teams of ‘A Level’ students showcased their Engineering projects that were undertaken with local and national companies. All projects were judged on the day with prizes awarded to the winners in many different categories such as “Best Application of Engineering and Technology” and “Most Innovative Solution to the Project Set”. All prizes were sponsored by companies and organisations such as Airbus and the Department for Education and Skills.

Younger Primary school pupils competed in the North Wales Finals of the F1 in Schools Primary Challenge. Teams of pupils have designed and made model cars which were raced on the day on a 20 metre track. Each team also displayed their design process and gave a verbal presentation to the judges. Prizes were sponsored by local companies.

There were many more interesting and exciting demonstrations and interactive exhibits based around the theme of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). These included displays from relevant companies and University departments. A popular challenge from C.I.T.B. required contestants to construct a 15-metre long, model cable-stayed bridge, based on the same design as the Second Severn Crossing.  As they got to grips with the task, contestants discovered more about the range of career opportunities the industry has to offer.

A police car complete with an amazing amount of modern technology was on display as well as several racing and rally cars.  On the same theme of speed there was an actual full size replica of the Bloodhound Supersonic Car which will soon be attempting to break the world land speed record when it is hoped it will reach 1000 miles per hour!

Awards and prizes were presented by Sian Parry Huws.
