West Park Primary school is located in the village of Nottage, about 1 mile outside of Porthcawl. The school was built and opened for teaching in 1971 and has since been extended to incorporate the growing needs of the surrounding area and community with the opening of a purpose- built, full-time nursery. Through 2008 & 2009 the school has been awarded the ‘Eco-schools Green Flag’, the ‘BECTA ICT excellence award’.
The school has entered a team in the Primary Schools Bloodhound class of the F1 in Schools Challenge for the past three years. In the south Wales finals during that time they have been successful in gaining overall 1st, 2nd and in 2011 yet another 1st place. This has meant that their team has travelled to the UK final every year they have entered.
The 2011 team is called Team Dynamite. The members shown in the photograph are, from left to right: Rhiannon Mainwaring, Lloyd Mortimer, Robert Fenton, Hannah Parry, James Evans-Jones and Katie Shears. They say:
“On 25th January 2011, we travelled to Swansea Waterfront Museum and competed in the south Wales final. The day was great success for Team Dynamite as we were first overall and our car proved to be the fastest on the day, travelling 20 metres in a time of 0.85 seconds!!
The judges were highly impressed with our display stand, portfolio, presentation and enthusiasm for the F1 competition. As a result of this success, we progressed to the National Finals in London in March 2011.
This was the third time the school has made it to the National Finals; however, we had never won an award at this level. The pupils worked extremely hard throughout the day and took part in a number of races, presentations and interviews by the judges.
During the awards ceremony the team felt that we had done our best. It was extremely rewarding to be placed third overall by the judges. The car proved to be better than before by coming third with an even faster race time of 0.619 seconds. This was our best result to date.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors (Lab Automotive, Aerospace, Terry Jones Fruit and Veg, Porthcawl RFC, Atlantic Hotel, Computer Explores, Colorfoto and Lasers Are Us) for their generosity and support throughout this competition.”
