Success for two Welsh teams at the FIRST® LEGO® League UK and Ireland Final 2017

Team Egni from Ysgol Glan Clwyd, Denbighshire and Team Lightning from Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn, Carmarthenshire are celebrating their success after attending the FIRST®  LEGO®  League UK and Ireland Final held at the University of West of England (UWE) Exhibition and Conference Centre, Bristol on Sunday 26 February 2017.

The teams were originally selected as winners of the North and South Regional Finals, which are hosted by EESW STEMCymru and supported by the European Social Fund through the Welsh Government, and were given the opportunity to represent Wales at the UK and Ireland competition.

This year’s UK and Ireland event was the largest ever final with nearly 500 young people attending who were all keen to demonstrate their skills in robotics, computer programming, teamwork, research, problem solving and communication. The Gadget Show presenter Jason Bradbury and local MPs Charlotte Leslie (Bristol North West) and Ben Howlett (Bath) also attended the event.

Team Lightning

The three boys from Team Lightning did exceptionally well, winning the Robot Design Award and will now be invited to compete in the FIRST® LEGO® League World Festival taking place in St. Louis, USA this April.  They are now working hard to raise funding to go on this once in a lifetime trip, and have received £2,000 from the IET as part of their prize towards their transport and accommodation costs.

Team Egni

The judges were particularly impressed with Team Egni’s performance in the Core Values and Robot Design categories, and therefore nominated them as one of five teams invited to the Open European Championship in Denmark in May.  They have also been awarded £1,000 towards their travel costs by the IET.

EESW would like to congratulate both teams and their teachers for their incredible achievement, and wish them good luck representing Wales in the upcoming tournaments.
